What’s New About The WHOOP 5.0?
Here’s what's new in WHOOP 5.0 - from release date, top features, band upgrades, new membership tiers and if it's really worth the upgrade.

The wait is over. Here’s what’s new, what’s changed, what’s improved and whether it’s worth the upgrade
After months of silence and endless speculation, WHOOP 5.0 has officially landed - and yes, it’s most certainly the biggest leap forward the brand has ever made. If you’ve been clinging on to your WHOOP 4.0 wondering if the next-gen band would ever drop (or if it would actually be worth it), the wait is over. WHOOP 5.0 is finally here (release date 8th May) and with it comes some serious upgrades. From smarter sensors, deeper insights and features that take recovery, training and health optimisation to a whole new level, this isn’t just an update, it’s a full-on reimagining of what wearable tech can do. Thinking of upgrading or finally jumping on board the WHOOP train? Here’s what’s new and what’s improved.
What is a WHOOP Band?
Not already a wearer and wondering what exactly it is or does? WHOOP is a screenless wristband that goes way beyond the basics and tracks your sleep, strain and recovery 24/7 by analysing millions of different data points. Worn on your wrist (or seamlessly built into WHOOP body apparel), it delivers science-backed insights and daily recommendations to help you train smarter, recover better and ultimately function at your best. Starting out in 2015 with the WHOOP 1.0, there have since been a second, third and fourth model with the fifth having just dropped.
What’s new about the WHOOP 5.0?
Where do we start? No seriously, not only has the hardware itself changed, but there are several new features and the introduction of three different subscription tiers. Let’s dive in.
First up, let’s talk about the actual device - well both of them. There are actually two new versions of the strap itself - the regular 5.0 and the MG (which stands for medical grade). Both smaller in size (by 7%) than the 4.0, they also have a longer battery life of 14 days so expect to be charging much less. Talking of charging, the new charging pack also holds another 30 days of charge too. The new enhanced sensors capture data approximately 26 times per second and have a redesigned processor for an impressive 10 x more power efficiency. The biggest difference between the 5.0 and the MG is that the MG has ECG (electrocardiogram) capabilities and uses electrodes to measure the heart’s electrical activity. Will dig into this a little deeper in a moment.
It’s not just the internals that got an upgrade… There's also a fresh lineup of accessories including the WHOOP Sportflex Band. The new body apparel is worth a look too as it features discreet, sewn-in pockets so you can wear your device off the wrist. From workouts to work days and even weddings, the 5.0 now fits into every moment in your day.
The new features of WHOOP 5.0
Now that we’ve covered the hardware, let’s get into what really counts, how WHOOP 5.0 helps you better understand your body and take control of your long-term health. From smarter insights to brand-new features, this update isn’t just about better data, it’s about living better. Here’s what’s new:
- Healthspan
WHOOP’s most forward-thinking metric yet, Healthspan offers a groundbreaking way to track how you’re really ageing… on the inside. Using nine key biomarkers, it calculates two powerful new insights; your WHOOP Age (which is your personalised physiological age, based on how your body’s actually performing not just your birth date) and your Pace of Ageing (a score that reflects whether you’re ageing faster, slower, or on track). Since we’re all looking to slow our pace of ageing, it even gives daily guidance on how to improve that. Whether you're training hard or just trying to live a little longer, it’s a super smart way to see how your lifestyle habits are affecting your long-term health.
- Advanced Sleep Tracking & Haptic Alarms
The sleep tracking just got smarter too with an updated sleep score algorithm and deeper sleep stage analysis. Say goodbye to disruptive and loud alarms (which can start your day off on the wrong foot) as there’s now new haptic alarms that gently wake you up at the optimal time based on your recovery. It also suggests ideal bedtimes to help you stay consistent which is undeniably one of the most underrated recovery hacks.
- Improved Fitness Tracking
Another area in which it’s massively upped its game is fitness tracking. From daily step counts to VO2 max, muscular strain analysis and support for over 145 different activities, expect to train even smarter. With accurate and real-time insights from weightlifting to walking the dog, it’s never been easier to unlock peak performance or to simply be a little more active.
- Blood Pressure Insights
It can now give you blood pressure estimates too. Previously calibrated via a traditional cuff, you can now get a new layer of cardiovascular insight straight from your wrist. Do remember this is not a replacement for a medical check-up though and instead think of it as adding a little extra context to your wellness picture.
- Women’s Hormonal Insights
The WHOOP 5.0 goes further than just cycle tracking and now offers even more tailored guidance when it comes to menstrual cycles, pregnancy and perimenopause which is another huge win when it comes to being more responsive to women’s specific wellness. This can really help you understand how hormonal shifts are affecting your recovery, sleep, stress and performance.
- ECG (MG Model Only)
As already mentioned, if you’re opting for the WHOOP 5.0 MG model, you’ll get access to ECG capabilities which measure your heart’s electrical activity and can detect signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib). This is a huge step for proactive heart health tracking. Building on this ECG feature, the WHOOP MG can even notify you if it suspects irregular heart rhythms, potentially flagging AFib risk which is a leading cause of stroke and can be a super valuable early signal.
- WHOOP Advanced Labs (Coming Soon)
A game-changer in the making and with a waitlist already, the Advanced Labs feature will mean users can schedule clinician-reviewed bloodwork and have their results inputted directly into the app. By combining your biomarker data with your recovery, sleep, and strain scores, it delivers a full 360-degree view of everything that’s going on.
The three new membership tiers of WHOOP 5.0
WHOOP 5.0 isn’t just about upgraded hardware and shiny new features though… It's also about giving you more choice and flexibility too. With three new membership tiers, there’s now something for everyone - whether you're focused on workouts, optimising longevity or going all out with medical-grade insights.
For professional-grade performance, simplified, One is perfect if you want the core WHOOP experience at the best price. It includes all the essentials like sleep, strain, recovery, VO2 max, heart rate zones and hormonal insights plus the WHOOP 5.0 band of course.
For next-level training meets long-term health, Peak is best for those wanting to dig a little deeper. With everything from the One membership, it then includes access to healthspan, pace of ageing, health monitor and real-time stress tracking.
Painting the full picture, with medical-grade insights, Life is the ultimate WHOOP membership. Welcoming the MG device, it will give you blood pressure insights, heart screener with ECG, and irregular heart rhythm notifications too. This one was most certainly created for those wanting a complete view of everything that’s going on both inside and out.
Is WHOOP worth it?
If you’re after deeper insights, not just more data, then yes WHOOP 5.0 is absolutely worth it. This isn’t your average fitness tracker. It’s built for people who care just as much about recovery, longevity and stress as they do about their sleep and stress. Whether you’re training for athletic performance, managing burnout or simply trying to feel better day to day, WHOOP meets you where you’re at and helps you move forward.
The new features (especially healthspan, real-time stress tracking and the option for medical-grade data) is what really pushes WHOOP into a league of its own. Plus, with the three new membership tiers, there’s even more flexibility to meet your own goals and budget.
The bottom line? If you want to understand your body better, implement smarter habits and optimise how you live, not just how you train, WHOOP 5.0 isn’t just worth it. It’s built for it.
